This second “Bring your history” day took place in a shopping mall in the city centre of Mikkeli – a place where you surely wouldn´t expect to run into archives! But the experiment was successful – the archivists representing and introducing the topotheque tool in the mall generated great interest in priorly invited content donators and more importantly captured the attention of by-passer. Mikkeli as a city has strong historic military roots and is currently often referred to as the archives’ capital of Finland.

In deed, during this event over 700 images, amongst them some extreme rarities, got digitized and will be uploaded to the topotheque of Mikkeli, soon also publicly accessible online.

Treasures uncovered: These notes from a prisoner-in-war have been kept in a tiny container made of birchbark.

Some rare WWII field hospital photos were also digitized. At first, the donator was thinking of getting rid of these old photographs. Gladly, she didn’t since they are now considered as treasures at the Military History Center in Mikkeli. Photo: Eeva Vahvaselkä’s Home Archives, Mikkeli, CC-BY 4.0
